10 Simple Desk Stretches for Busy Office Workers

We know that sitting at a desk for hours is not good for our health, but most of us are too busy to squeeze in a walk in the middle of work.

But you can still get some workout without leaving your desk. Here are 10 head-to-toe desk stretches that are great for busy office workers. They’ll boost your circulation, strengthen your muscles, and loosen stiff joints.

1. Neck Tilt

A neck tilt helps with the stiffness and aches caused by staring down at your computer for hours.

With your shoulders down, slowly move your neck to the side until your left ear touches your left shoulder. Hold for 15-30 seconds, then tilt to the other side. Repeat several times.

2. Shoulder Rolls

Shoulder rolls relieve tension and pain in your shoulders and upper back. While seated or standing upright, roll your shoulders in a circle 10 times, then reverse direction and do 10 more rolls.

3. Shoulder Knot Stretches

Shoulder knots can feel like someone’s stabbing you in the shoulders. To reduce pain, place one elbow on the other and try to cross your arms so your palms touch. Slowly lift your elbows up as you lower your chin. Hold for 20 seconds, then your elbows and repeat 3-5 times.  Here’s a demo: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DSgOQ1kEegi/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

4. Forearm and Wrist Stretches

Stretching your forearms and wrists helps relieve stiffness and pain from extended typing or writing.

Stretch your hand in front of you with your palm turned to one side. Rotate your palm to face the opposite side, then bend your hand and wrist until you feel a stretch in your forearm. Hold for 10-20 seconds, then switch to the other arm. Stretch each arm 3 times. Here’s how to do it: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DSayPD1kSU5/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

5. Finger Stretches

To deal with stiff fingers, spread them apart, then touch your fingertips to each other in front of your chest. Stretch your fingers by moving your palms closer then far apart (keep finger tips in contact with each other throughout). Repeat these movements as many times as you want.

6. Seated Spinal Twist

A spinal twist can reduce back pain from sitting too much and help loosen your core. Sit up straight and twist your upper body such that you’re almost facing backwards. Keep your feet and lower body pointing forward. Hold for 20 seconds, then twist to the other side. Repeat three times.  Here’s a quick example: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DSdvy-mEauK/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

7. Seated Forward Bend

This is another great stretch to loosen your back and reduce lower back pain. Push your chair back from the desk or turn it sideways. With your feet flat on the floor and your upper body straight, bend forward as far as you can and hold for 20-30 seconds. Slowly get back up and repeat two more times. 8. Seated Figure 4 Stretch

If your hips are feeling tight and stiff, a seated figure 4 stretch is the best way to loosen them. Place the ankle of one foot on top of the other knee, forming a figure four. Then slowly bend forward. You’ll feel a stretch in your hip and thigh. Bend as far as you’re able to and hold for about 15 seconds, then switch to the other leg. Do three reps per leg.

9. Leg Extensions

While seated, stretch your legs out in front of you. Slowly raise them as high as you can, then put them back down (remember to use slow controlled movements for maximum effect). Repeat until you get tired.

10. Foot and Ankle Stretches

Extend your foot until your toes point downward. Then slowly flex your foot until your toes are pointing up. Repeat this flexing and extending motion 10 times per foot.  Here’s how: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DSi0z6IkSMy/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
