Avoiding Injuries in Ice Hockey: What You Need to Know

Ace Sports Clinic has been heavily involved in the rapidly growly Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) this season, looking after this years 2024 Grand Final and Goodall Cup runners up Melbourne Ice who had a fantastic season.  Players are exposed to a number of injuries throughout a long and gruelling season and can be divided into a number of categories.

Whether it be facial, hand, shoulder, hip, knee or ankle, players are at risk of contact based injuries.  Given the speed of play and the high number of collisions, players can be at risk of fractures, muscle contusions, subluxations and ligament injuries in a number of different structures.  For example, the Knee Joint (MCL, LCL sprains), the Shoulder Joint (AC joint), and Ankle (ATFL or syndesmosis sprains).

Soft tissue Injuries

Often occurring at speed, muscle strains can also occur including but not limited to quadriceps, hamstring, adductor, calf and back injuries.

Overuse injuries

Being a long season comprising of over 30 games, often with back to back games on a weekend, overuse injuries can present.  For example, tendinopathies, plantar fasciitis, upper back, neck pain and hip flexor tightness.

Concussion

Being a contact based sport, head collisions do happen throughout a season and require immediate examination and monitoring and attention to ensure players remain safe.
